World Bicycle Relief is dedicated to providing access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles.

If you have met me - Sandi - you know that my husband John and I are very dedicated cyclists. In Aug 2012 we will be riding in the Wrigley Field Road Tour to raise money for World Bicycle Relief. Since hearing about this organization we have become firm believers in their cause. I look around here in the United States and I see how much we have, even in these tough times, and I see how much good can come from one bike. So, even after the Wrigley Field Road Tour is a memory John and I will still be supporting this cause and it would be great if you joined us.
Simple, sustainable transportation in the form of a bicycle multiplies an individual's efficiency. Compared to walking, bicycles improve access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity by increasing carrying capacity and accessible travel distance while decreasing the time it takes to commute to and from schools, clinics and markets.
World Bicycle Relief was founded by SRAM corporation in 2005 in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami. World Bicycle Relief partnered with aid organizations on the ground in Sri Lanka to distribute over 24,000 bicycles to aid the rebuilding of lives by providing access to education and healthcare and reconnecting workers to their livelihood.
After the success of this disaster relief program in Sri Lanka, World Bicycle Relief was approached by aid organizations working in Sub-Saharan Africa to assist with volunteer healthcare programs in Zambia where 40% of the population was suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS. In partnership with local aid organizations, World Bicycle Relief worked to provide 23,000 specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles to healthcare workers treating HIV/AIDS patients. World Bicycle Relief also train local field mechanics to build, maintain and repair bicycles.
